With the launch of the Stone Island MARINA SS25 collection, we're taking a look back at the history and inspiration behind this iconic line.
Stone Island MARINA first appeared in 1983, just a year after the company's founding. The name STONE ISLAND itself was inspired by adventure, the sea, and exploration, making the MARINA collection a natural fit. Founder Massimo Osti even purchased The 'Guapa,' a yacht reminiscent from Duran Duran's 'Rio' video from the 80s.
Early Marina items focused on lightweight, water-inspired garments suitable for both land and sea. These included gym shoes, t-shirts, and jackets, often featuring horizontal stripes, anchors, and Breton-style stripes, which remain a staple today.
Fabric innovation was key, with early uses of RASO GOMMATO in jackets and raincoats, as well as the waxed linens we continue to see.
Over time, this sub-collection has grown into a thriving standalone range with a dedicated following.
